Reducing climate impact

We're backed by EQT, with its Nordic heritage and belief that doing good is good business. This means investing in a way that aims to maximise returns whilst also benefiting society and the planet.

This is why Bespak has placed sustainability at the very centre of our business, an emphasis that we believe differentiates us in the CDMO space. We're driven to meet the expectations of all of our stakeholders, from our owners and our customers, to the patients who use our products, and our workforce communities.

In the immediate term, our focus is on playing a leading role in the transition to climate-friendly propellants in pMDIs – a vital step in lowering our industry’s environmental footprint. We’re not only developing compatible formulations and devices, but have committed to commercial-scale manufacturing with both low Global Warming Potential (GWP) propellants by as early as 2025:

  • HFO-1234ze – near-zero GWP, 99.9% lower than currently used propellants

  • HFA-152a - 90% lower GWP than currently used propellants

We’re proud to be supporting the industry transition to greener propellants, but we will continue to push ourselves to achieve more. How do we look at our processes, our supply chain, our innovation in sustainable healthcare? Our vision is to be a sustainability leader. This vision will take us much, much further.

Increasing resource efficiency

We drive sustainability through our operations at site level, aiming to optimise our use of resources:

  • EcoVadis GOLD medal awarded at Holmes Chapel, SILVER medal awarded at King’s Lynn

  • 2,300 solar panels installed in 2023 at our Holmes Chapel site, providing 10% of our site usage with 227,773 carbon tonnes saved in 2023 alone

  • Reduction in King's Lynn site annual electrical consumption by changing the Hepa type filters on HVAC units and switching sitewide lighting to LED

  • All sites focused on reducing waste, closely monitoring water consumption and recycling targets via our Site Waste Champions

  • Working closely with our customers and our full supply chain to reduce the environmental impacts of all our operations

Health and wellbeing

Health and wellbeing are fundamental drivers of our daily business. While pharmaceutical products can contribute positively to society by improving human health and quality of life, we recognise that our operations can have negative social and environmental impacts. We take a responsible approach to all aspects of our operations, and believe that high ethical standards, accountability and good stakeholder relations create long-term benefits for both Bespak and society at large.

Consequently, sustainability is at the heart of what we do every day at our three sites, enabling us to design, develop, manufacture, assemble and dispatch finished pharmaceutical products and devices that support global health, while protecting our global and local environments.
