Manufacturing of pMDIs using propellant HFO-1234ze(E)

pMDI Sustainability

resource : Presentation

As the transition to low global warming potential (GWP) propellants in pressurised Metered Dose Inhalers (pMDIs) begins in earnest, industry leaders need to prepare for considerations and challenges beyond formulation development in the R&D setting.

Manufacturing with the new propellants is one such consideration. One of the main concerns highlighted to date has been the potential flammability of the new propellants, and the challenges this may pose to manufacturing at commercial scale. While HFO-1234ze(E) is classified as non-flammable, it does exhibit flammability limits under certain conditions, and there is no industry consensus on what precautions need to be taken.

We have performed an extensive assessment of our existing HFA-134a and HFA-227ea pMDI manufacturing facilities and processes to determine compatibility with HFO-1234ze(E).
