Pressurised Metered Dose Inhalers (pMDIs) remain essential in the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), yet they are also associated with a significant environmental burden. While much of the industry focus has centred on transitioning to lower global warming potential (GWP) propellants, the environmental impact of pMDIs extends far beyond propellant selection alone. Materials, manufacturing processes, and energy-intensive component production all contribute substantially to product carbon footprint, creating a critical opportunity for broader device-level decarbonisation.
Performing a cradle-to-gate carbon footprint assessment of the Bespak BK357 pMDI valve identified decarbonisation opportunities across raw materials, manufacturing processes and performance testing when used with next-generation propellants.
